Renewing Your NMC PIN – NMC Revalidation Support for Nurses

As a registered nurse in the UK, keeping your Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) PIN active is essential to continue practising legally in NHS, private or agency roles. The NMC require nurses to renew their registration every three years through revalidation, as well as pay an annual retention fee to remain on the register. This guide summarises the key steps and requirements for renewing your NMC PIN and completing the NMC revalidation process.

Key NMC Renewal & Revalidation Dates for Nurses

Your annual retention fee expiry date and revalidation application date are shown in your NMC Online account. Revalidation must be submitted on or before the first day of the month your registration expires. The NMC will email you 60 days before your key dates, so ensure your contact details are kept up to date in NMC Online.

Step 1 – Understand NMC Revalidation Requirements

NMC revalidation is the process that demonstrates you remain fit to practise. To revalidate, you must meet the seven NMC revalidation requirements.

These include:

  • completing the required number of practice hours
  • undertaking continuing professional development relevant to your role
  • collecting practice-related feedback
  • writing reflective accounts
  • taking part in a reflective discussion with another professional
  • making a health and character declaration
  • confirming you have appropriate professional indemnity arrangements in place.

You must keep evidence of all requirements and then demonstrate these requirements to an appropriate confirmer. Where possible, your confirmer should be your line manager.

Recording your Confirmation

You must use the MNC templated Confirmation Form to record your confirmation. You are not required to submit this during your revalidation application however you should retain this form as part of your records.

Visit the NMC website to find out more about the revalidation requirements. https://www.nmc.org.uk/revalidation/requirements/.

Step 2 – Complete Your NMC Online Revalidation Application

Once you have gathered your evidence and completed your reflective discussion, you can submit your revalidation application through NMC Online.

Your online application becomes available 60 days before your revalidation date. During the process, you confirm that you have met each requirement, but you do not upload certificates or evidence unless requested. Your application must be submitted before your revalidation deadline.

You can access NMC Online at https://www.nmc.org.uk/registration/nmc-online/.

Step 3 – Pay Your Annual Retention Fee

Although revalidation takes place every three years, you must pay your annual retention fee each year to keep your NMC registration active. Payment is made via NMC Online and must be completed by your fee expiry date.

If your fee is not paid on time, your registration will lapse and your name may be removed from the NMC register, meaning you cannot practise until you have completed the readmission process.

After You Submit Your Revalidation & Renewal

Once the NMC has received both your revalidation application and your annual retention fee, they will usually confirm your renewal by email within a few days. You can then check your registration status in your NMC Online account. You should retain your revalidation evidence, as the NMC may request to see it as part of a random verification process.

Why NMC PIN Renewal Matters for Nurses

Holding a valid NMC PIN and completing revalidation is a legal requirement for nurses working in the UK. It demonstrates that you continue to meet professional standards and provide safe, effective care. If you fail to renew your registration on time, you may be removed from the register, prevented from working in NHS, private or agency roles, and face delays returning to practice.
